Koffie werd voor het eerst in China geïntroduceerd in de 19e eeuw door Franse missionarissen in Yunnan. Deze eerste introductie leidde niet tot commerciële schaalvergroting. In de jaren 60 werden overheidsinitiatieven gelanceerd om de productie en commerciële interesse te stimuleren, maar dit had weinig effect. Pas bij een nieuwe ronde overheidsprogramma's in de late jaren 80 kreeg de koffie in China de nodige impuls. In de specialiteitensector is het nog steeds een opkomende regio.

De heer Hu is een geboren Yunnanees die al 20 jaar koffie produceert. Hij richtte Banka Farm en wasstation op, werkt samen met verschillende kleine boeren en biedt werk aan honderden mensen. Het beheer van het station is overgenomen door Yunnan Coffee Traders, die naast het experimenteren met nieuwe verwerkingstechnieken ook nieuwe variëteiten en de eerste optische sortering in de regio introduceerden.

Verwacht plakkerige zoete kersencompote-tonen met een romig chocolade mondgevoel en een karamelzoetheid.

Finally got my hands on a bag after it kept selling out — the Yunnan origin really comes through in the cup, smooth and earthy without any bitterness. Stored the beans in my airtight jar and they stayed fresh for a solid three weeks. Worth the wait, though I wish they'd stock more.
