En Llano de Agua, Santa María la Asunción, un pequeño pueblo al norte de Oaxaca, México, más conocido por los hongos alucinógenos que por el café, vive Maricela Esperón. Aunque su abuelo también fue caficultor, el camino de Maricela hacia la agricultura no fue fácil. Cuando llegó el momento de que él se jubilara, su padre, Miguel, debería haber sido el heredero. Pero como en ese entonces Miguel solo tenía hijas, su padre rompió la tradición y le cedió su parcela a su hermano. Miguel se fue entonces a la Ciudad de México, y regresó después de ahorrar lo suficiente para comprar su propio terreno, que Maricela asumió cuando su padre enfermó.

Ahora gestionándolo todo ella sola, Maricela se enfrenta a los desafíos de la humedad mazateca, que hace que el café lavado sea la norma para evitar que las cerezas se enmohezcan. Pero Maricela, rompiendo de nuevo la tradición, produce cafés naturales. Para lograrlo, sigue una rutina intensiva: seca las cerezas en el techo de su casa, la única superficie lo suficientemente plana. Luego las embolsa por la noche, las guarda abajo durante la noche, y las vuelve a subir cada mañana. Cada lote tarda 30 días en secarse.
