Tato káva pochází z oblasti Virunga v Severním Kivu. Tato oblast, sousedící s Ugandou a Rwandou, má ideální terroir pro vysoce kvalitní ovocné kávy s plným tělem a jedinečnými tóny černého čaje a vanilky. Tato konkrétní várka pochází z promývací stanice ve Virungách. Toto pohoří je proslulé díky Národnímu parku Virunga, kde strážci parku bojují za ochranu goril před pytláky.

Robusta pochází z Demokratické republiky Kongo, ale arabiku dovezli Belgičané během kolonizace na konci 19. století. V 70. a 80. letech 20. století dosáhla produkce vrcholu a země se stala největším producentem na kontinentu. V 90. letech došlo k masivnímu poklesu kvůli občanské válce a chorobám kávovníku.
